REFLECTIONS

SERBIAN HERITAGE NIGHT – Milwaukee area Serbs will probably see Nikola Jokic on the floor and a lot of out-of-towners in the bleachers when the Bucks host the Denver Nuggets on Sunday, January 30th.  The game will take place on Serbian Heritage Night at the Fiserv Forum Arena. Tickets are available online. Slovenian Vlatko Cancar is out for the Nuggets with a left hip strain right now, but likely will be back to play for SHN. Vlatko played with the Serbian team Mega Leks before being drafted by the Nuggets.

BISHOP’S VISIT – On our front page are several photos from the November 6th Blessing of the Home Office. His Grace Bishop Irinej of the Eastern Diocese made a special trip to the new SNF HQ to lead the ceremony. SNF President Dane Medich and Home Office staff hosted an open house during the afternoon and evening. When His Grace arrived, several members of the clergy were with him and assisted during the service. The next day, President Medich was honored with a seat on the dais at the Centennial celebrating the founding of the first diocese in the United States and Canada of the Serbian Orthodox Church. He addressed the crowd at the banquet which took place at the William Penn in downtown Pittsburgh, beginning with thanking His Grace for visiting and blessing the Serb National Federation.

“SHOT AND A GOAL”…NOT – Goal tender Alex Nedeljkovic in his first season with the Detroit Redwings made at least one super impressive save. He did it with the paddle of his stick during a game against the Chicago Blackhawks in October. The video on ESPN demonstrates Alex’s hard-earned ability to do his job well defending the net. Sports Illustrated described him as “one of the most exciting netminders in the game today,” while ESPN said this latest feat in the 6-0 rout of the Blackhawks makes Alex’s effort an early candidate for “Save of the Year.” Alex was born and raised in Parma, near Cleveland, Ohio, goes to St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church on Wallings Road, and is the son of Nenad and Theresa Nedeljkovich. We continue to follow his great career.

ALEX IS FEATURED – In this issue, another vignette from Branko Mikasinovich’s book “Memorable Encounters” appears courtesy of the author. This time he writes about our 2020 SNF Person of the Year Alex Machaskee of Cleveland, Ohio. Alex, not one to let grass grow underneath his feet, made a recent trip to Serbia with his wife Carol. In this picture, he is shown in the company of His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije.
